On the eve of the 2024 United Methodist General Conference in Charlotte, N.C., climate activists hold a candlelight Vigil for Creation to mark Earth Day and to call the denomination to greater stewardship of creation.

Legislation to put the different geographical regions of The United Methodist Church on equal footing has crossed a significant threshold. Meeting just ahead of General Conference, the Standing Committee on Central Conference Matters advanced five petitions representing the bulk of proposed worldwide regionalization. That means the petitions have cleared the first hurdle faced by all legislation at General Conference — making it out of committee.

The directive was daunting: Review and revise 50 years of denominational social witness into a document using fewer pages, inclusive of all United Methodist communities, to address complex social issues and integrate biblical and Wesleyan references.

A newly published section of the Advance Daily Christian Advocate contains additional petitions and updated reports for United Methodist delegates to consider as they prepare for General Conference.

Young people have likened the current happenings in The United Methodist Church to a divorce with devastating effects on the children, but they asserted there is hope for a bright future.
